Grasses are a significant part of a pollinator garden. An ideal percentage is 50% grasses and 50% native wildflowers. They are host plants for many skippers and provide overwintering shelter for insects like bumble bee queens. Birds love their seeds. They are also very deep-rooted, which adds a lot of organic matter to the soil and therefore improves water infiltration and erosion control. Grasses are low maintenance, weed suppressing, add winter interest and can even serve as a privacy screen.
