Perennial up to 150 cm high with leaves up to 15 cm long. Produces reddish flowers up to 5 cm across in summer.
Occurs in open woods, meadows and along rivers. Requires moist soil in sun to part shade.
Attracts hummingbirds, bees and butterflies.
